I had the pleasure of attending the 2nd Australian Space Domain Awareness and Space Traffic Management Conference at UNSW Canberra last week. During the conference, I presented the concept of our GRIFFIN technology contributing to Australian’s Space Domain Situational Awareness in the L-Band frequencies. Due to GRIFFIN’s 3D passive radar operations it’s equally capable of working multiple terrestrial, airborne and space LEO RFI threats simultaneously.

Early Feb2023, our GRIFFIN network also tracked and geolocated LEO L-Band Radar satellites (not part of formal customer trials), completing near instantaneous orbit determinations. The conference poster presents these live SV LEO tracking and computed orbit outcomes, for a two southern Victoria observation stations on a 140km baseline. Also, additional numerical modelling predicts the very precise orbit determination outcomes from multiple synchronised observations for a nation wide network of GRIFFIN single sensors deployed to each state capital city. With the bi-static / passive radar nature of GRIFFINs distributed sensor network architecture, combined with its low-cost footprint, it makes a perfect choice for monitoring national L & S Band Radar LEO SV operations by utilising a continental wide observational geometry.
