Keilor Park GRIFFIN Sensor Install

The GPSat team are pleased to announce the first commercial GRIFFIN Sensor Node (SN) install at Keilor Park (KP) in Melbourne’s International airport (MEL) freight precinct. We very much appreciate Vic Dept of Transport’s (V_DOT) ongoing support and confidence provided by this first contract. With this first site now live online, the next phase transitions to training DOT staff for ongoing daily operations management.

Immediately post commissioning, SN’s 3D phased L1/L2 array highly directional beam forming, started tracking/ recording a steady daily stream of mobile GNS/GNSS L1 jamming sources. These low to horizon signals are clearly emanating from the local freeway systems up to several kms in distance and are totally consistent with expected vehicle speeds and freeway geometries. All RFI sources are recorded with their RF spectral characteristics and 3D directional beam azimuth / elevation changes.

Interestingly, many LEO SARs operating in earth observation bands just above L2 are also being tracked. It’s great have a solid mix of both in both terrestrial and space data sets. However, no spoofing threats have yet been detected. Both J&S threats present major issue for future MEL’s combined GBAS approach and ADSB safety operations.

KP, is the first of several sites planned for MEL’s northern approach over flight suburbs, to then be combined into single wide area Distributive Passive GPS/GNSS Radar network. Combining these static SN’s with our mobile SN_Van (Jan24 post), this is expected to deliver a very adaptable/ effective Jamming and Spoofing geolocation services. Depending on the multple SN network measurement GDOP geometries, instantaneous 3D geolocation accuracies are expected to range from several metres, out to several hundred of metres while protecting 400sq kms or larger.
